The View Surprises Make-A-Wish® kid Mya, Helping to Grant her Sofia Carson Wish

This week, ABC’s The View helped grant their very first wish on-air, part of The Walt Disney Company’s enterprise-wide celebrations in honor of World Wish Day, the anniversary of the wish that inspired the founding of Make-A-Wish^®. Hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Sara Haines welcomed 15-year-old Mya and her mother, Tanya, to discuss her brave journey battling brain tumors in a segment highlighting brain cancer awareness month.

They discussed Mya’s grueling battles with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), a disease that produces tumors along nerve pathways, often developing in the brain and along the spinal cord. Mya was diagnosed at just 6 months old, and has since experienced 89 chemo treatments, lost the majority of her hearing and is currently preparing for her fourth brain surgery in her fight against the disease. Yet, throughout her challenges, Mya’s resilience and bravery have been irrepressible. She laughingly asked, “Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” 

Just like any other teenager, Mya loves to draw, dance, play with her dogs, and happens to be a huge fan of Disney’s Descendants, and most especially actress Sofia Carson who played Evie in the hit movie franchise. Mya explained that Sofia inspires her because “No matter what the day brings her, she’s always happy.” 

Joyful tears fell when The View revealed Sofia Carson to surprise Mya and make her wish to meet her favorite actress come true. The two couldn’t stop hugging and Sofia told Mya, “To be able to be your wish is one of the greatest honors of my life and you are my hero and everyone here’s hero.” 

At the end of the segment, there was one final surprise in store – Mya would soon receive her own custom Evie costume designed especially for her.
